How does Children's Dentistry Help?

Children’s dentistry or pediatric dentistry as it’s called in the industry, is really important to keep your little ones healthy as they grow up. We know that oral health is a key contributor to overall health, so it’s best to get your kids used to the dentist’s office early on by taking them for regular checkups. This helps them see the dentist as a friend, not something scary or painful. Regular visits also mean they’ll get the dental care they need to keep their teeth clean and healthy.

Looking for a dentist for kids? North Stony Dental Clinic in Stony Plain, is here to help!

What is Children's Dentistry?

Children’s dentistry focuses on the oral health of kids from when they’re babies until their teen years. It covers important stages like getting baby teeth, losing them, and the growth of permanent teeth. Regular dental check-ups during these times are key to catch any dental problems early, teach good oral habits, and make dental visits a normal, stress-free part of life. These visits help prevent dental issues and make the dentist’s office a comfortable place for kids. For more on how children’s teeth develop, visit the Canadian Dental Association here.

When Should Your Child See the Dentist?

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children see a dentist within six months of the eruption of their first tooth or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. Early visits allow dentists to catch any potential problems and guide parents on proper oral care techniques. At North Stony Dental, we encourage parents in Stony Plain and surrounding areas to schedule their child’s first dental appointment around this time.

Establishing a routine of regular check-ups from a young age can help children grow into their smiles healthily and happily. Early dental visits not only ensure proper oral development but also help children become comfortable with dental care environments, reducing anxiety about future visits.

We also offer free Orthodontic consultations for patients as early as 3 years old, so we can make sure that your child’s teeth are on the right track.

I am a VERY nervous dental patient and these folks are AMAZING. From the front end staff to the hygienists to the dentists - they are all so friendly and personable. Dr. Winand was awesome and did a great job. He was very honest and gave me all the info I needed to determine my course of action. I chose to have an extraction and he did it so beautifully that it didn’t even hurt after the freezing wore off. The hygienists that I had were so sweet and friendly, it really helped with my anxiety, and I feel so much better about going to the dentist now. Highly recommend these folks - and I did read the very few negative reviews and those were all based on client stupidity and ignorance. Nothing to do with the clinic and their staff. Phenomenal place to go!

The Canadian Dental Association advises that children should have their first dental visit with a dentist within six months of the appearance of their first tooth or by their first birthday. Early visits help our kids dentists spot and manage any potential oral health issues.

Yes, Dental X-rays are safe for you and your children. We use modern, low-radiation X-rays to minimize exposure and protective lead aprons to shield your child. X-rays help us diagnose hidden problems that aren’t visible during a regular exam.

If your child experiences a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth or severe pain, contact us immediately. We offer advice over the phone and will arrange an urgent appointment if necessary.

Familiarizing your child with the dental environment through ‘happy visits’ where they meet the dentist without receiving treatment can help. Reading books about dentistry, explaining what will happen in simple terms, and using positive reinforcement also make dental visits easier. Additionally for those kids who need it, also offer Nitrous Gas to help alleviate any anxiety in our office.

Primary teeth usually begin to grow, or a child begins “teething” around six months of age. This may delay up to 12 months or more in some children. Usually, the central incisors or the two front teeth on the lower jaw are the first to grow. Then the lateral incisors grow on both upper and lower jaws. Lower molars start growing next, followed by the canine teeth. The entire set of primary teeth should grow in around 25-33 months, this can vary according to each child’s, genetics, growth, and nutrition levels.
